Caesars Brother Siberian Iris

The Caesar's Brother Iris (Iris sibirica 'Caesar's Brother') is a fantastic clumping perennial with tall sword-like bluish-green foliage that supports rich, deep intense blue flowers with splashes of yellow on the lower petals. Caesar's Brother is one of the most easily grown Iris, blooming from late spring into summer.

The clumping upright form and texture and the clumps will grow together and snuff out most weeds. They make magnificent cut flowers as the violet-blue flowers are held aloft on rigid stems. Butterflies and hummingbirds will stop by for a visit to wriggle between the petals in search of nectar and Bees too will forage for pollen!

Iris prefers moist, well-drained soil in full sun, but will tolerate some afternoon shade. This Iris needs plenty of water throughout the season to look its best. It can also tolerate poor, dry soil because its thick roots penetrate the soil deeply but grow and flower best when planted in rich, well-drained moisture. In average garden settings, provide supplemental water during periods without rain, and 3-4 inches of arborist mulch to regulate soil moisture and enrich the area as it breaks down.

Containing chemicals that deter deer and rabbits make these carefree plants and the roots are rarely bothered by burrowing rodents. Deadhead the flowers as they fade and trim back the foliage in the autumn. Every 3-5 years, divide the clumps and rearrange the rhizomes to keep them in tight formation and to prevent them from being buried too deeply, preferring to be planted more shallowly in the ground, the top 1/3 of each rhizome should be exposed and 2/3 of it should be below ground for best results. For the winter, loosely cover your Iris in a layer of clean leaves or evergreen boughs, straw or compost, pulling it back in the spring.
