French Painted Cast-Iron Birdbath w/ Perched Birds, c. 1950s -29½"

A charming painted cast-iron birdbath dating from the 1950s. A shallow, scalloped basin shaped like a leaf is raised on a tall baluster-form stem and broad floral base, giving the piece a graceful, slender silhouette. Two small, naturalistically modeled birds perch on the rim, one with its wings raised as if about to take flight, bringing a delightful sense of movement to the composition. The original pale painted finish has weathered attractively, with scattered rust and areas of paint loss revealing the darker iron beneath, while the birds retain much of their original charcoal-black coloring, softened by pale gray undersides and scattered areas of loss. The overall condition is beautifully timeworn, consistent with decades of outdoor use.
