All of our citrus trees are grafted onto trifoliata rootstock which we grow from our own seed. If you wish to grow your own rootstock and experiment with budding or grow a barrier hedge, then this plant is for you.
Trifoliata trees are highly cold-hardy and can tolerate temperatures as low as -23°C. Because of its cold tolerance, and partial disease resistance it is often used as rootstock for grafting other citrus varieties, imparting cold hardiness to the grafted tree.
Trifoliata trees are a thorny, deciduous tree that can reach heights of up to 4.5 meters tall. One notable feature of trifoliata trees are its long, sharp thorns, which cover the branches and stems. These thorns serve as a defence mechanism against browsing animals and make the plant useful for creating hedges or barriers. The plant produces fragrant white flowers in spring, followed by small, round, green fruits that ripen to orange in early winter.
