Van Cherry Tree

Van is a classic dark sweet cherry with medium-to-large fruit that deepens to glossy red as it ripens. Dense, juicy flesh provides a firm bite, pronounced sweetness, and enough brightness to keep the flavor lively. The cherries are excellent for fresh eating, and their substantial texture also serves baking, freezing, canning, and preserves. A spring display of white flowers precedes the productive canopy, adding ornamental interest before the late-spring to early-summer crop.

Choose a full-sun location with deep, well-drained soil and dependable air movement. This bare-root tree grows to a semi-dwarf size on Maxma 14 rootstock, making annual pruning and harvest more manageable. Shape the canopy to admit light, water deeply during establishment, and keep moisture even through fruit development. Sweet cherries can crack after rain near maturity, and birds quickly find darkening fruit, so plan for timely picking and an exclusion strategy.

Van requires pollen from a compatible sweet cherry whose bloom overlaps. Appropriate partners include Bing Cherry and Lapins Cherry. Plant at least one compatible tree within normal bee-flying distance; a lone Van tree should not be expected to set a dependable crop.
